Temporary Resident Visas (Visitor Visas) For Canada
Canada welcomes millions of temporary residents annually. While Canadian citizens and permanent residents do not need permission to enter, everyone else must obtain authorization to visit Canada. This page offers an overview to help you determine if you need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter the country.

Overview
Unless they are citizens of a visa-exempt country, individuals looking to enter Canada for temporary purposes—such as tourists, temporary foreign workers (those with work permits), and international students (those on study permits)—must apply for and obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

Citizens of visa-exempt countries traveling to Canada by air must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to their departure. However, U.S. citizens do not need either a TRV or an eTA, while Green Card holders in the U.S. require an eTA to enter Canada, regardless of nationality. Generally, those who need a TRV do not require an eTA, and vice versa.
The TRV is issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside Canada and indicates that the holder meets the requirements to enter Canada as a visitor. TRVs can be for single or multiple entries, and tourists are typically granted a stay of up to six months. The duration for temporary foreign workers and international students varies and is determined on a case-by-case basis. Extensions can be requested from within Canada.
It’s crucial to understand that having a valid TRV does not guarantee admission into Canada. Upon arrival, all visitors must demonstrate that their visit is temporary. Border officials may deny entry to anyone they believe does not intend to leave Canada once their visitor status expires.
Key points to remember:
Some applicants may need to undergo a medical examination, especially if they plan to stay long-term or have recently visited specific countries. For more details, click here.
Criminal records or health issues can prevent entry into Canada.
Visitors must demonstrate that they can financially support themselves during their stay.
Citizens from certain countries may be required to provide biometric information. To see which countries this applies to, click here.
Countries with Conditional Eligibility
Citizens from certain countries may qualify for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if they meet all three of the following criteria. If they do not meet these conditions, they will need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to travel to Canada.
To be eligible for an eTA, these travelers must:
1. Have held a Canadian visitor visa (TRV) within the past 10 years or currently possess a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa. The U.S. visa must be valid at the time of the eTA application but does not need to be valid when traveling to Canada.
2. Be traveling to Canada for a short visit, business, or tourism (typically for stays of up to six months).
3. Arrive in Canada by air or transit through a Canadian airport using a valid passport from one of the eligible visa-required countries.
These eligibility rules for an eTA apply to citizens from the following visa-required countries:
Antigua and Barbuda
Argentina
Brazil
Costa Rica
Mexico
Morocco
Panama
Philippines
St. Kitts and Nevis
St. Lucia
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Seychelles
Thailand
