What is the Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents?

Effective July 4, 2022, the Super Visa allows eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit their family in Canada for up to 5 years without needing to renew their status. Existing Super Visa holders can also apply for a 2-year extension, potentially enabling them to stay in Canada as visitors for up to 7 years in total.

Available year-round, the Super Visa has minimum income requirements similar to those of the Parents and Grandparents Program.

This visa is particularly beneficial for parents and grandparents from countries that require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. With a Super Visa, they can travel between Canada and their home country without the hassle of repeatedly applying for a TRV.

For those not needing a TRV, the application process remains the same. Instead of receiving a visa, they will obtain an official letter from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) authorizing their visit for up to two years upon initial entry.

Who Can Apply for the Super Visa?

Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents may qualify to apply for the Super Visa. However, applicants must not be inadmissible to Canada for health or security reasons and may need to meet specific requirements established by the visa office they are applying through.

It’s essential to note that dependents cannot be included in this application. Only parents or grandparents, along with their spouses or common-law partners, can be part of a Super Visa application.

What is the Super Visa Application Process?

The application process for the Super Visa closely resembles that of a regular Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). However, it requires additional documentation to ensure that parents and grandparents will be adequately supported during their stay in Canada. This includes:

A letter of invitation from the child or grandchild residing in Canada.
Documentation proving that the child or grandchild meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) minimum (see the relevant table).
Proof of the parental relationship, such as a birth certificate indicating the applicant as a parent.
Evidence of medical insurance coverage for at least one year from a Canadian insurance provider.

Applications should be processed at the Canadian visa office corresponding to the applicant’s place of residence outside Canada. Depending on the office, additional documents may be required.

The complete application will be evaluated based on several factors, including the purpose of the visit and the applicant’s ties to their home country. This can be demonstrated through family connections, financial stability, and other links outside Canada.

All Super Visa applicants must undergo a medical examination. Forms and instructions for this examination will be provided by the visa office after the application submission.

What are the Super Visa Eligibility Requirements for the Sponsor?

To qualify for a Super Visa, the child or grandchild inviting their parents or grandparents must demonstrate that their household meets the required Low Income Cut-Off (LICO). Acceptable documentation to provide this proof may include:

Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 forms for the most recent tax year
Employment Insurance stubs
An employment letter detailing salary and hire date
Pay stubs
Bank statements
