Renewing Or Changing Your Study Permit

During your studies in Canada, you may need to renew or extend your study permit. It's essential to maintain your legal status in Canada throughout this process.

This page offers an overview of how to maintain your status in Canada and the process for renewing or changing your study permit. It’s important to stay informed about the requirements to ensure you remain compliant while studying. If you have any questions about the renewal process or maintaining your status, feel free to ask!

Maintaining Status in Canada

It’s crucial not to exceed your authorized stay in Canada without first applying for a change in status. Always comply with any conditions attached to your study permit, such as work restrictions, maximum working hours, and study limits.

Carefully review your study permit to understand any specific conditions it may contain. If you don’t apply for a renewal or change in status before your current permit expires, you must leave Canada before submitting a new application to return.

If you submit your application for renewal or a change in status before your current status expires, you will maintain “status” as a temporary resident while awaiting a decision. Be sure to keep copies of documents proving that you have requested an extension, such as proof of postage, courier delivery, or an internet submission receipt. If your status expires before a decision is made, you can continue studying as long as you remain in Canada.

This rule applies only to temporary residence applications. For permanent residence applications, you must have valid temporary status (as a visitor, student, or worker) to remain in Canada while your application is being processed.

If you lose your status in Canada due to non-compliance with the conditions of your study permit, you can apply for restoration within 90 days of losing that status.

Renewing/Extending Your Study Permit

If your study permit expires before you complete your program, you will need to apply for a renewal. It’s best to submit your application for a new study permit at least 30 days before your current one expires. You can apply either online or by mail.

Once your study permit extension is approved, you may need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), if applicable.

If you’re studying in Quebec, you will also need to obtain a new Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ). Generally, if you require a study permit, you will also need a CAQ.

Changing Schools

IRCC states that students do not need to obtain a new study permit to transfer between educational institutions, study programs, or study levels. As long as the study permit is valid, students can continue their studies in Canada without needing to apply for a new permit.
