FROM HOPE TO REALITY
To qualify for certain family sponsorship programs, sponsors must demonstrate a minimum level of income to support themselves, their family members, and those they wish to sponsor. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses “Minimum Necessary Income” (MNI) thresholds to evaluate a sponsor’s ability to provide financial support. Applicants will only be considered eligible to sponsor their family members if they meet the MNI requirements for their family size.
Who is Included in the Family Size Unit?
The size of the family unit is determined by who is currently supported by the sponsor in Canada, as well as those they plan to sponsor. To calculate your family unit, include:
Yourself
Your spouse or partner
Your dependent children
Your spouse’s or partner’s dependent children
Any other person you previously sponsored for whom you remain financially responsible
The parents and grandparents you wish to sponsor
Your parents’ or grandparents’ spouse, partner, and dependent children
Additionally, you must also include dependent children, spouses, partners, and separated spouses who will not be accompanying your parents or grandparents to Canada.
For parent and grandparent sponsorship, the sponsor in Canada must exceed the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for three consecutive taxation years (with the exception of Quebec). This requirement ensures that sponsors are financially prepared to take on the responsibilities associated with caring for elderly family members.
Sponsors applying under the 2024 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program must meet the MNI requirements established by IRCC.
The following figures represent the MNI for individuals in 2024, residing in Canada and outside the Province of Quebec:
