Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Nationals from specific countries do not need to secure a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Instead, the Canadian government has implemented an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for these travelers.
Prior to the introduction of the eTA system, foreign nationals exempt from visas did not undergo a thorough admissibility check until they reached a Canadian Port of Entry.
Overview
The eTA is essential for most travelers from countries that do not require a TRV when entering Canada by air. Citizens from visa-exempt nations planning to fly to Canada must apply for an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to their departure. Notably, U.S. citizens are exempt from both the TRV and the eTA, while Green Card holders from the U.S. do need an eTA, regardless of their nationality.

Countries with Conditional Eligibility
The Canadian pre-approval system is applicable solely to TRV-exempt individuals visiting Canada temporarily by air. For a detailed list of common questions regarding the eTA, click here.
Those needing an eTA to enter Canada must provide some personal details and answer basic questions related to criminal history or health issues.
To fill out the online application, you will need:
A valid passport from a visa-exempt country
A credit card to pay the $7.00 CAD fee
A valid email address
Internet access and a few minutes of your time
The eTA remains valid for five years from the date it is issued or until one of the following occurs:
The applicant’s passport or travel document expires
The eTA is canceled
A new eTA is issued to the applicant
The eTA contains the applicant’s name, date and place of birth, gender, address, nationality, and passport or travel document information. If an applicant cannot use the electronic system due to a physical or mental disability, they can apply through alternative means, including a paper application form.
Exemptions
Several exemptions from the requirement for pre-approval to travel to Canada are in place, including:
U.S. Nationals: Citizens of the United States.
Royal Family: Her Majesty the Queen of Canada and any member of the Royal Family.
Residents of St. Pierre and Miquelon: Citizens of France residing in St. Pierre and Miquelon who wish to enter Canada directly from there.
Re-entering Visitors: Visitors, students, and workers returning to Canada after solely visiting the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon, as long as they return before the end of their authorized stay or any extension.
Refueling Flights: Foreign nationals on a flight stopping in Canada solely to refuel, provided they have the necessary documents to enter the U.S., or if their flight originated from the U.S. after lawful admission.
Emergency Landings: Foreign nationals on flights making unscheduled stops in Canada due to emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
Transit Programs: Foreign nationals transiting through Canada under the Transit Without Visa or China Transit Program.
Diplomatic Passports: Holders of passports with diplomatic, consular, or official acceptance issued by the Chief of Protocol for the Government of Canada, who are accredited diplomats or officials of a foreign country, the UN, or any of its agencies.
Transportation Crew Members: Foreign nationals entering Canada as crew members of a transportation vehicle, either to join a crew or to transit after working, provided they have a ticket for departure within 24 hours of arrival.
Military Duties: Foreign nationals entering Canada solely to fulfill official duties as armed forces members from designated states under the Visiting Forces Act, unless designated as part of a civilian component.
Aviation Inspectors: Foreign nationals entering Canada solely to inspect flight operation procedures or cabin safety of international commercial air carriers, if they are civil aviation inspectors with valid documentation.
Accident Investigations: Foreign nationals participating as accredited representatives or advisers in aviation accident investigations under the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act, provided they have the necessary documentation.
Countries with Conditional Eligibility
Citizens of certain countries may qualify for an eTA if they fulfill all three of the following criteria. If they do not meet these conditions, they will need to apply for a TRV to travel to Canada.
To be eligible for an eTA, these travelers must:
1. Have held a Canadian visitor visa (temporary resident visa) within the past 10 years or currently possess a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa. The U.S. visa must be valid at the time of the eTA application but does not need to be valid for travel to Canada.
2. Be visiting Canada for a short period, typically for business or tourism, with stays of up to six months.
3. Be arriving in Canada by air or transiting through a Canadian airport using a valid passport from one of the eligible visa-required countries.
These eligibility conditions for an eTA apply to citizens of the following visa-required countries:
Antigua and Barbuda
Argentina
Brazil
Costa Rica
Mexico
Morocco
Panama
Philippines
St. Kitts and Nevis
St. Lucia
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Seychelles
Thailand
