Express Entry category-based draws have been introduced to invite candidates from six specific categories to apply for permanent residence.
These category-based draws will complement the existing Express Entry draws conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). In addition to invitations to apply (ITA) based on Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score cut-offs, IRCC will continue to hold draws that focus on candidates eligible for specific programs, such as the Provincial Nominee Program.
The six categories eligible for these targeted draws include:
1. Healthcare professionals
2. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields
3. Skilled trades, including carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
4. Transportation workers
5. Agriculture and agri-food sectors
6. Candidates with strong French language proficiency
To qualify for an invitation through a category-based draw, candidates must meet all the specific requirements outlined by IRCC for that draw. When these draws occur, IRCC will rank candidates in the pool who meet the category criteria and invite the top-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence.
