Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is the federal agency responsible for managing Canada's borders.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is a key player in Canada’s immigration system. This page offers an overview of CBSA’s responsibilities and functions within the immigration framework.
CBSA's Role in Canada's Immigration System
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is dedicated to safeguarding Canada’s security and prosperity by regulating the movement of people and goods across its borders.
Operating under the Department of Public Safety, the CBSA collaborates with the Minister of Public Safety and the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to enforce the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). One of its primary roles is ensuring that foreign nationals adhere to the provisions of the IRPA.
Upon arrival at a Canadian Port of Entry (POE), you will be greeted by a CBSA officer who will screen you to verify compliance with Canada’s immigration, security, and health regulations. If the officer determines that your purpose for entering Canada is legitimate and meets all necessary requirements, you will be permitted entry.
The IRPA is just one of over 90 laws, regulations, and international agreements that the CBSA is responsible for enforcing. Overall, the CBSA oversees 117 land-border crossings, operates at 13 international airports, and conducts marine operations at key Canadian ports, along with activities at 27 rail sites.
