If you were born abroad to a Canadian citizen, you may be eligible for Canadian citizenship.

Being Canadian comes with numerous benefits, including the right to live permanently in one of the world’s top countries and the privilege of holding a powerful passport. The Canadian citizenship certificate, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), serves as definitive proof of your citizenship. It, along with a Canadian birth certificate, is one of only two documents accepted by Passport Canada as proof of citizenship. Note that Canada recognizes citizenship by descent only for the first generation.

Eligibility Criteria

You may qualify for Canadian citizenship if you were born outside Canada and at least one of your biological or legal parents was a Canadian citizen at your birth. To confirm your citizenship, you can submit a “proof of Canadian citizenship” application, also known as a Canadian citizenship certificate application.

It’s important to note that Canada allows citizenship by descent only for the first generation born outside the country. You can apply for this certificate at any point in your life, regardless of whether your Canadian parent is alive or deceased.

Additionally, children adopted by a Canadian citizen after birth must apply for Canadian citizenship and are not eligible for a citizenship certificate.

Canadian Citizenship Certificate Application Process

To apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate, download the application package from the IRCC website. You’ll need to provide evidence that at least one of your legal or biological parents was a Canadian citizen. Applications can be submitted online through IRCC’s portal.

Once your application is received, you’ll get an “acknowledgement of receipt,” and your file will be reviewed. You can check the status of your application online, but keep in mind that complex cases may take longer to process. IRCC also offers an urgent processing option for special situations, which can expedite access to benefits like healthcare, social insurance numbers, employment, or emergency travel to and from Canada.
