Canadian Citizenship Application Process

Here’s a streamlined overview of the steps to apply for Canadian citizenship once you confirm your eligibility:

Steps to Apply for Canadian Citizenship

1. Submit Your Application
Complete and send your application to the appropriate IRCC office. After verification, you’ll receive a notice to take the citizenship test.

2. Citizenship Test
Required for applicants aged 18-54. The test covers Canadian history, geography, political processes, and rights/responsibilities of citizenship.
The test consists of 20 questions, with a passing score of 15. It usually takes 30 minutes.
Bring original documents, including immigration papers, passport, and ID. Some applicants may also have a brief interview with a citizenship judge.

3. Language Proficiency
Applicants aged 18-54 must prove proficiency in English or French. Acceptable proof includes:
Results from an approved language test
Transcripts or diplomas from secondary or post-secondary education in English or French
Evidence of achieving Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher in designated language programs.

4. Citizenship Ceremony
Successful applicants attend a ceremony to receive their citizenship certificate, officially becoming Canadian citizens. You can then apply for a Canadian passport.

Canadian Citizenship Ineligibility

It’s essential to review the documents you received upon becoming a permanent resident to ensure all Terms and Conditions have been met. If any requirements remain unfulfilled, you may not qualify for Canadian citizenship.

You may also be ineligible if you:

Have a criminal record or pending charges in Canada or abroad
Have been ordered to leave Canada
Have been refused citizenship due to misrepresentation
Have had your Canadian citizenship revoked
